Incomplete Case Citations
 |
"How do I find a judgment
in the Library
when I don't have a full case citation?" |
You can use a case citator to find the full case citation.
A case citator is a resource designed to provide access on reported
judicial decisions. Relevant information is provided in citation
format. Information on how a case was dealt with in later cases
(ie. approved, disapproved, overruled or distinguished) will also
be included. Some case citators (eg CaseBase) also provide references
to relevant articles.
Examples of case citators available at Macquarie University Library
are CaseBase, First Point and the Australian
Case Citator.
The Australian Case Citator is only available in print and is held
in the Law Reference section at Law Ref KU18.A4.A87
CaseBase and First Point are
databases made available through the Library's homepage. To access:
- From the Library homepage (http://www.library.mq.edu.au),
select Databases.
- Choose from Search
for Databases, Browse Databases by
name, or select Law
from Browse Databases by Subject.
If you have the case name, enter these in the Case/Article
Name search box in CaseBase, or the
Case Name search box if using FirstPoint. Use AND
instead of v, eg. Wakim v HIH Casualty
should be entered as Wakim and HIH Casualty. Do not include words
such as Pty, Ltd, or Co. in
your search.
If searching for cases on a topic in CaseBase enter your search
words in the Catchwords/summary box. Catchwords are subject terms
added to the published report. They identify the main areas of
law dealt with and provide the legal context of the primary case
or article.
If searching for cases on a topic in FirstPoint enter your search
words in the FreeText Search box.
Once you have completed this you are in a position to determine
the full title of the Law report.
