Locating law Reports

The following exercise is designed to give you the opportunity to practise finding the text of decisions in either print or electronic format at Macquarie University Library. The decision you have been asked to find has been selected because it is available in both formats.

Question:

As part of an assignment you are required to read the following case:
New South Wales, Attorney-General of v Kennedy Miller Television Pty Ltd (1998) 43 NSWLR 729

Use the following steps:

a. to locate the print version of the case

  1. Determine the full title of the law report indicated by the abbreviation NSWLR in the citation by consulting the abbreviations list. Legal abbreviations & Law reports Citations - http://www.library.mq.edu.au/find/legalabbrev.html
  2. Check the Library's holdings by searching on the title of the law report in Journal Finder.
  3. Note the Call Number for the law report and find the appropriate volume on the shelves in the Library.

b. to locate the online version of the case:

  1. Go to the Library home page and follow the directions given.
  2. Navigate to the required database.

    HINT: Use the table of online law reports given in the section on Finding Law Reports, Using Journal Finder and databases to determine the appropriate database
  3. From the main page of the selected database, select the Cases tab
  4. Select the required law report series from the drop-down list next to Sources
  5. In the case name search box enter key words from the case name. Click search.

    HINT: When entering a case name use AND instead of v.
    Do not include words such as Pty, Ltd or Co. in your search.
