Full Case Citations

2. Case citations with year reference in square brackets

Other report series identify the volumes by the years in which they were published. The volumes are not sequentially numbered and so the correct volume can only be identified with reference to the year of publication. The year reference is placed in square brackets and refers to the year the case was published.

Examples of law report series that use this citation style include All England Reports (All ER), and Law Reports, Queen's Bench (QB)

The first two examples are for judgments that have been published in law reports, ie. they are reported judgements.

A third case citation style has also been developed to accommodate full text judgments retrieved from web databases eg. AustLII. This style is called a medium neutral citation. It resembles example two but differs in several significant ways.
