Use of Truncation and Wild Card symbols

Another way of broadening a search is to use truncation or wild card symbols.

Truncation

Truncation symbols are used to search for all variations in word endings. For example

$ child$ retrieves child, children, childhood

Wild Cards

Wild card symbols are used to substitute for variations of spelling within a word. This symbol is useful when retrieving documents with British & American spelling.

? behavio?r retrieves behaviour, behavior

Different databases use a variety of truncation and wildcard symbols. Refer to the database’s Help screen or the Library's Databases' Search Tips at http://www.library.mq.edu.au/find/searchtips.html to locate the appropriate truncation & wild card symbols.
